Bakery Square 2.0
Pittsburgh, East Liberty
The most recent part of the impressive Bakery Square development is Bakery 2.0. It consists of residential living in Bakery Living 1 and Bakery Living 2 and the Bakery 2.0 office building with a two story enclosed bridge connecting it to the original Bakery building.
The Living buildings are equipped with Kawneer NX5000 windows and NX840 sliding glass doors and Tubelite 14000 storefront at all of the grade level areas. In all there over 700 windows and 220 patio doors all in a Class 1 clear anodized finish and glazed with PPG Solarban 60 over clear.
Bakery 2.0 office building is over 35,000 square feet of Tubelite storefront and curtain wall—all fabricated by Specified Systems in our Washington PA. facility. An interesting detail is the custom extruded flush casing around all of the storefronts. Since Strada Architects in Pittsburgh designed the building for fuel efficiency, we needed to implement a design the would bridge the gap on the head and jamb of each opening to cover the large insulation cavity. Working with Tubelite, we custom engineered an extruded casing that was set in the openings first and the new frames installed against it to create a 10 1/2” depth system. Glazing for the project was AGC ES28 over clear.
The feature of the project is the pedestrian bridge which crosses busy 4 lane Penn Avenue. It connects the 4th, 5th, and 6th floors of each building. Framing materials are 400 Series curtainwall by Tubelite and glass is PPG Solarban 70 on Starphire over Starphire ultra clear low iron glass. Coordination by all trades was complex and our system involved all parallelograms to meet the two slopes at each level. Added to the complexity was that access from the interior was limited because of the structural steel so all work was completed from the outside in phases.
The bridge, which is backlit with LED colored lighting is a stunning addition to the project. The project tested the full range of Specified’s capability, from windows to structural glazing to accent glass on the interior.
