Located next to the University of Pittsburgh is Carlow College. Our company was invited to provide glazing for the Grace Hall University Commons project. The product application was relatively simple. It is Kawneer 451T front set in a clear anodized finish. What is not simple is the glazing application. It combines insulated glass of PPG Solarban 60 over clear, PPG Azuria over clear, and SAGE electrochromic glass.
This project marks the second of only two electrochromic glass applications in the region— both by Specified Systems. The first was in 2014 at Grove City College on their STEM building . Electrochromic glass is glass that allows electronically adjusted shading. Each unit has a low voltage connection and is controlled by a preset monitoring system that adjusts tint according to daylight conditions. The process of fabrication is time consuming and complicated comparatively and installation time is increased substantially. Still, the benefits outweigh the cost on elevations where sun control is an issue.
SAGE Glass is a division of St. Gobain.
